PhotoDrift app icon: a stack of photo cards on a dark rounded square

PhotoDrift

Your photos, drifting across your desktop.

A macOS menu bar app that shuffles your wallpaper from Apple Photos and Adobe Lightroom. Choose some albums, pick an interval, forget it exists.

Requires macOS 14 or later · Free and open source

PhotoDrift's General settings: Launch at Login, a shuffle interval from 15 minutes to 4 hours, and an open Scaling menu showing Fill Screen, Fit to Screen, Stretch to Fill, Center and Tile.
Pick how often the wallpaper changes and how each photo is fitted to the screen.
PhotoDrift's Albums settings, showing a scrollable list of Adobe Lightroom albums with checkboxes and Select All and Deselect All buttons.
Tick the albums you want. Apple Photos and Lightroom sit behind the same picker.

What it does

Your photos stay yours

PhotoDrift talks to exactly two places: your local Photos library and, if you connect it, Adobe's Lightroom API. There is no PhotoDrift server, no account, and no analytics. Lightroom sign-in uses OAuth with PKCE, and the resulting tokens live in your macOS Keychain. Cached images sit in the app's own container and never leave the machine.

Installing

  1. Download the latest DMG from Releases.
  2. Drag PhotoDrift to your Applications folder.
  3. Launch it — the icon appears in your menu bar, not the dock.
  4. Grant Photos access when asked, then pick albums under Settings.

Builds are signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so they open without a Gatekeeper warning. Lightroom is optional; Apple Photos alone works fine.
